Ways to Host Environmental Design Discussion at Center’s Grand Opening

(Savage, MD/Washington, DC) – Washington-area eco-interior design leader, Design Scheme Interiors, LLC, (DSI) is spearheading an environmentally-savvy design movement in the Nation’s Capital at the new Center for Green Urbanism. The Center is one of the first “green model” business incubators in Washington, DC, offering office space, an art gallery, and a model for living green in an urban setting. During the Center’s Grand Opening on October 15, Certified Interior Environment Coach Sherry Burton-Ways, Design Principal of DSI, will host discussions about the eco-interior design choices used in the center and cost-effective ways to incorporate these elements into homes and offices.

Eco-interior design choices such as energy-efficient ceiling fans; eco-friendly upholstery fabrics: low VOC wall coverings; reclaimed teak furniture; low-odor, environmentally-friendly paint; and solar shade window treatments make it an ideal space for small businesses, meetings, events and art showcases. When selecting the elements for design, Burton-Ways was sure to incorporate material that would leave a minimal carbon footprint.

Sherry also studied with International Feng Shui Guild Past President, and Feng Shui Interior Designer Mary Dennis and received certification as a Feng Shui Redesign Consultant through the School of Graceful Lifestyles. Ways holds a Certification in Chi-ology Home Staging for Feng Shui Professionals through Feng Shui Practitioner and Educator LuAnn Cibik, a Denise Linn Protege.

Through my design and Feng Shui studies, I have been able to ascertain what I think are the basic elements of Feng Shui Redesign.

Form: Form or shape is generated with lines, planes and volumes.  In Feng Shui, we understand that the shapes carry with them a specific energy:  metal/round, wood/rectangular, fire/triangular, earth/square and water/irregular.

Scale: Scale is the relative size of something as compared or related to another element of known size.  Human scale is most frequently used in interior design.  In Feng Shui, scale is most important in choosing objects to affect cures.  In a large room with a high ceiling, a small wind chime would be out of place, if selected as a chi enhancing object.

Color: Single colors do not exist in isolation. They affect and are affected by their surrounding colors.  Complimentary colors reinforce each other.  A light color placed against a dark background will appear lighter than it actually is.  A dark color on a light background will appear darker than it actually is.  Bright warm colors tend to make objects appear larger.  Dark colors will make objects appear smaller.  Warm colors tend to advance, while cool colors recede.  In Feng Shui, colors are associated with specific elements.  When choosing to apply a cure with color, it is important to see the composition as a whole.  Sometimes a little will go a long way.

Texture: Texture is the surface quality of a material.  Our perception of texture can be influenced by a material’s proximity to other textures, the distance we view it from the lighting conditions we view the texture in.  Yin/Yang adjustments can be made with the use of texture.

Pattern: Pattern is the repetition of a decorative motif on a surface.  If a pattern is small and viewed from a distance, it can appear to be a texture.  Yin/Yang adjustments can be made with the use of pattern.

Light: Good lighting is both an art and a science.  We use lighting to affect spatial perception, enhance color,  highlight surfaces and textures, de-emphasize undesirable areas or architectural features, accent and emphasize objects and areas, add interest to a visual environment, set or enhance the mood of an interior space.  Adding light will add yang to any environment.  It may also be perceived as chi enhancing.  Candlelight will add fire.

Feng Shui is not a religion or spiritual path. A primary concept of Feng Shui is that there is a constant mutual interaction between a person’s chi and the chi of his or her immediate environment- each is constantly affecting and shaping the other.  When we live and work within a site of healthy chi, our own life force is enhanced and preserved.

We can use Feng Shui in decorating our homes and offices to place objects, furniture and other items to achieve peacefulness and harmony.  Living and working spaces and their decor affect how we inhabit them.  With Feng Shui we can enhance positive and harmonic energies in our homes.

If you want to learn and be able to integrate Feng Shui into your décor and design, the first thing to do is learn about feng shui in general and its main concepts.  By learning this, you will find yourself naturally acquiring information on how to decorate different spaces according to feng shui.

According to feng shui design, the way and the position in which we place our furniture, the colors we choose, the different objects and places we choose for them, must be done to ensure harmony.  Actually, in China people used to look for a feng shui expert to guide them in occasions such as when they buy a new home.

Here are some basic Feng Shui design rules you can begin to use at home now:

1. Have nothing broken
2. No clutter
3. Zen surfaces (at least 50%)
4. Surround yourself with only things you love
5. Create a sacred area in the home

There are some general rules about the colors to use in different spaces within a home.  For example, red raises your blood pressure, blue cools you down, green gives you a sense of space.  But these things are not as important as your own “true colors”.  This is because your true colors say things about you:  who you are; what you wish to express; what you need; what creates the atmosphere that allows you to live each day.

This is why, when you are moving into a new home or thinking of redecorating any part of the one you already have, this is the perfect time to be looking at how best to create a space for yourself that brings out the best in you that makes you feel peaceful as well as energetic; spacious as well as secure.

Decorating with your inspiration color could take you into your inner world of dreams and fantasies, uplift your spirits and raise your vibration level.

Walk around your home.  Pick out all the colors you like to look at and make a list of them.  Pick out all the colors that are neutral to you.  Then, pick out the colors that you don’t like to look at and make a list of them.

Looking at color can provide you mental therapy.  If it is pleasant, it is balancing to you.  If it is neutral, it means you have a sufficient amount of color in your aura.  If it is irritating, it is too much because you already have more than enough of that color vibration in your soul.

The colors in your home will give out messages about your personality and who you are.  So show yourself and your home off to the fullest and most colorful, making sure you use colors that are true to who you are.

There are also two aspects of Feng Shui:  remedial and preventative.  Preventative Feng Shui is applied when you decide that you want to renovate or redecorate your home.  The idea behind this type of Feng Shui is that if you are going to make significant changes to your home then that is a great opportunity to improve the energies that exist in those spaces, thus improving your life.  Many Feng Shui cures, when they accompany redecoration or renovation efforts, will not add any cost to the project and should help you make more informed choices on the colors, materials, and shapes that you are going to use, as well as how you plan to arrange the furniture and so on.  Preventative Feng Shui has an element which takes into consideration the time required for more profound changes; remedial Feng Shui can be applied more on an “as needed” basis.

In Feng Shui, timing is important.  If you implement changes with a positive mindset, the result will feel good; if you’re feeling moody or stressed, you should leave the changes for another day.  Choosing the right time to commit to a project and accomplish your goals with a positive frame of mind will result in better flow of chi (good energy) and more harmonious atmosphere.
